Welcome to Cantala!

Cantala is a musical home for those who have a passion for achieving choral excellence. Traditionally, this has been an experience for those with experience-choral or music experience, that is. But we now recognize that this is not an inclusive practise, nor equitable. Cantala is rethinking its commitment to provide an equitable, inclusive and diverse musical experience for any and all that want to sing. To see our initiative through, we have started a mentorship program.

Who is this mentorship program for?

This program is for those that have little to no musical reading or formal musical experience. While we have limited spots available for this initiative, we are excited to be able to support all people who love to sing and want to be a part of a vibrant choral experience.

What does it look like?

During rehearsals you will be paired up with an experienced singer who will guide you through the rehearsal notes and learning of the music. This may look like/include finger leading, modelling, encouragement and answering questions you may have. Out of rehearsal the mentor is available for any questions that you have during your practise at home. Upon the approval of the mentor they may have time to help with note learning in person, outside of rehearsal. You will be a part of a whatsapp group that makes you part of the ongoing concerns and conversations the members of the choir have between rehearsals. Questions about any learning you have is also welcome. You will be performing in the main chorus, in all performances that we present. You will be a valued member of the choir.

How will I learn the music between rehearsals?

A vocal track and a musical score will be provided to you.

Does it cost more to be in the program?

It does not cost any more.

How do I audition for the mentorship program?

When you sign up to audition, mention that you are interested in the mentorship program. You will be asked to sing a favorite song that you know and love via in person or zoom (whichever one is the most convenient for both parties). You will discuss your hopes and dreams about singing and what, if any, experiences you have had that have informed your interest in singing and pursuing a choir like Cantala.

What are my responsibilities?

To give 100% effort in participation. To come to rehearsal on time, consistently and to practise your music in between rehearsals every week. To be prepared every week. To learn your music so you are able to perform it without any concern at the end of the term. To have a growth mindset: be open to learning about the musical score, and making sense of the new language on the page. To come and talk to the conductor or your mentor immediately if you are unsure, uncertain, concerned, worried, or feel like you are falling behind. We are here to make sure you are successful.
